3 Best Day-Trips from Salt Lake City

While Salt Lake City is undeniably a great place to explore, I'd dare to say that the real magic lies just beyond its borders, waiting to be discovered within a mere two-hour drive. So, join me today as we set our sights on three nature journeys that should be on your itinerary the next time you find yourself in this city. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure that lies in the enchanting surroundings of Salt Lake City.

Bonneville Salt Flats

Starting off strong, we are mentioning one of the most popular attractions near SLC, the Bonneville Salt Flats. With a capacity of 300,000 acres, this stunning attraction is like no other place. The ground is literally covered in salt, ranging from from a few inches of salt to large mounds a few feet thick. It’s a stunning sight to look off into the distance and only see white grounds for miles and miles.

The flats are open year-round and there are a handful of events that take place throughout summer and fall, such as Speed Week. If you are wanting to explore the salts in solitude, without events, summertime is a popular choice. Depending on your comfort level and the weather conditions, you can drive on the flats for free and explore the whole area!

When I went, I just parked at the rest area near the flats and just walked out onto the sands. You can walk for miles and find plenty of space without people if you are wanting to take photos and videos. While during the day the flats look incredible, I would also suggest taking a look at sunrise or sunset when the colors of the sky reflect on the ground.

Now, I won't lie; the drive from Salt Lake City to the Bonneville Salt Flats may not be the most eventful journey, but trust me when I say it's a trip worth making. Pack a hearty lunch, grab your camera, and prepare for exploring this extraordinary natural wonder. The Bonneville Salt Flats are calling, and they promise an experience that's truly unique.

Fifth Hot Springs

Our next adventure leads us on a beautiful 2-mile trek to a natural wonder that's nature's jacuzzi – Fifth Hot Springs! Located southeast of Salt Lake City, this local gem can be accessed through a trailhead conveniently labeled as "Fifth Water Hot Springs Trail Start" on Google Maps. As you approach, you'll find a small parking lot that grants direct access to the trailhead, but on busier days, be prepared to scout for roadside spots and take a brief walk to reach the trailhead itself. It's worth the effort, I promise!

Once you’re ready to start, you’ll head to the trail right behind a rather upscale outhouse, and be ready to get your heart pumping as the incline starts as soon as you do.

When I decided to come here, I wasn't quite prepared for the fact that it would be an actual hike to reach the springs. So, remember to pack essentials like water, sturdy hiking shoes, and dry clothes for your return trip (no chafing here, thank you!).

But let me tell you, the entire hike leading up to the springs is an absolute dream and worth every mile. Once you arrive, you'll discover a series of hot springs nestled next to each other. And if that's not enough, there's a fairly sizable waterfall nearby, providing the perfect place to cool off.

Be warned though - the water in these springs varies in temperature. Some pools are rather chilly, while others can be downright scalding hot. You'll need to be careful and dip your toes in, testing the waters until you find that perfect spot that suits you just right.

Also be ready for the smell that comes from the springs - it can cling to you and your clothing for a while, so be prepared to carry the scent of your adventure with you.

Sunset Peak via Brighton Lakes Trail

Last but most definitely not least, we're taking you away to the nearby town of Brighton, where a challenging hike awaits, promising breathtaking views.

To get started, park your vehicle at the Brighton Resort and follow the trail that winds its way behind the resort buildings, named the "Lake Mary Trail." Now, this trail is steep, so steep that I found myself wondering if I'd suddenly transformed into a mountain goat after just 15 minutes of seemingly straight-up trekking. My heart was racing at 170 beats per minute! But I promise you, every ounce of effort is so so rewarding at the end.

The entire way up is incredible, natural beauty, and chances to see some of Utah’s wildlife! I was lucky enough to spot a moose during my trek! When I went on this adventure in September, there was a refreshing chill in the air, accompanied by a gentle drizzle (followed by a beautiful rainbow!). But the trail still had colorful wildflowers, and as the day progressed, the sun’s warmth gradually took away the morning's coolness.

The journey covers roughly a mile to reach the first lake, but as you press on for an additional two miles you’ll come across more water and make it to the summit for the most incredible views. This out-and-back trail is approximately 6 miles in total and can be comfortably conquered within a few hours.

So, lace up your hiking boots, pack your sense of wonder, and prepare to escape into the picturesque landscapes of northern Utah. This trail promises not just physical exertion but also an opportunity to connect with the beauty of nature.
